As desert dwellers and explorers at heart, Paige + Brian wanted to explore White Sands, New Mexico for their engagement photos! We offer all our couples the option for a destination. They trekked all the way from Colorado for these photos, which makes them A+ troopers.
As it so happens, we ended up shooting on Earth Day and the result was a stunning tribute to both Paige + Brian’s bubbly, adventurous love AND the jaw-dropping, stark beauty of the desert. Brian is a drone photographer and brought it along, so I could use it during parts of our session. We began by shooting as the sun rose in White Sands Monument, which is a field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. Crazy fact: these dunes are the largest of their kind on the whole planet. That vast sweeping sky and landscape isn’t just a photographic optical illusion. It REALLY is that big.
If you’re planning a sunrise engagement session, we really map out the logistics together. There’s nothing worse than arriving at your location to find the gates locked–we make sure the timing lines up perfectly to ensure you get the BEST photos and have a relaxing time. After we had explored our way through White Sands, we meandered through the Valley of Fire–hiking through 5,000-year-old lava fields. They were a little treacherous and not for the faint of heart but because we’re all experienced hikers, it wasn’t a problem for us. We finished our session by running around a desolate highway, soaking in the bright, warm sun.
The entire time, we couldn’t stop talking about what an incredible privilege it was to shoot in such a magical place. Thanks to shooting at sunrise, we had it all to ourselves! These White Sands, New Mexico engagement photos were totally magical.
